Uni students can return to campuses starting March 1

KUALA LUMPUR: All local university students will be allowed to return to their respective campuses in stages beginning March 1, 2021.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad in a statement today said the decision was made following a special meeting by the National Security Council on Dec 23.

For students from red zones, Noraini said they must arrive at their campuses 10 days earlier to allow them to be quarantined first.

For universities located in Sabah and Sarawak, she said the student intake procedure will follow decisions made by respective state governments.

"The NSC has also approved the ministry's proposal to allow new and existing international students of private and public universities to enter the country as early as Jan 1, except for those who are coming from the United Kingdom.

"Foreign students must undergo the mandatory quarantine of 10 days upon arrival," she said in the statement.

Noraini explained that the reason behind the government's decision to allow students to return to their campuses was to allow physical classes to be conducted through a combination of teaching and learning activities involving face-to-face and online formats.

She also urged that academic activities on campuses to be carried out according to the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the Health Ministry.

"Health and safety precautions which are part of the new norm include wearing of face masks, using hand sanitisers and maintaining a safe physical distance".

For more information, students can call the ministry's Covid-19 Operation Centre which is available 24 hours at 03-8870 6777/6949/6623/6124 or visit the official websites of the respective learning institutions.
