Tan Sri Rahman Arshad meninggal dunia

 

KUALA LUMPUR: Tokoh Pendidik, Tan Sri Dr Abdul Rahman Arshad, dilaporkan meninggal dunia pada jam 10.45 pagi tadi.

Biodata Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Abdul Rahman Arshad

Y. Bhg. Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Abdul Rahman Arshad was born in Masjid Tanah, Melaka and began his education at the native Malay school at Masjid Tanah. He was later selected to enter the Special Malay class at High School Melaka. This class was in English for children selected from Malay vernacular schools. It was here where he had his primary and secondary level education.


Later on, he entered University of Malaya and then continued his studies at the University of Singapore, the University of Reading, New Zealand Administrative Staff College, Harvard Business School and finally at University of East London for his PhD.

He served in the Malaysian Education Service for more than 30 years, starting as a teacher in the Kuala Kangsar Malay College before moving on to become the Deputy Director of Education in Penang and Kedah; and then the Director of Education for the state of Kelantan. From Kelantan he moved on to the Ministry of Education as the Director of Examinations. Subsequently he became the Director of Educational Planning and Research, Deputy Director-General I and finally Director-General of Education before retiring in late November, 1991.

He was also active in international organizations having been appointed as Deputy Chairman of ISESCO in Rabat, Morocco and Chairman of INNOTECH in Manila, as well as Chairman of the Asia and Oceania group at UNESCO Bangkok. He also sat on committees of the Commonwealth Secretariat, London. He was also made an Eisenhower Fellow.

On retirement he was appointed Chairman of Bank Industri, Chairman of Exim Bank and Chairman of Malaysian Export Credit Insurance Bhd. In addition, he was also the chairman of five companies listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange. In the field of education, he was appointed Chairman of Univeristi Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and since 2004 he has been made the Pro-Chancellor. He has also been appointed Chancellor of University College of Sedaya International and Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). In 2005 he was bestowed the award of Educational Leadership and in 2007 he was appointed Chairman of the Advisory Panel to the Minister of Education on the Cluster Schools programme.

For his services to the country he has been bestowed many honours by the Yang DiPertuan Agong, the Sultans of Pahang and Kelantan and the Governors of Sabah, Melaka and Penang. He has also been conferred honorary doctorates by the University of Saskatchewan, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Heriot-Watt University Scotland, University of East London, Universiti Teknologi MARA, University College Sedaya International, University Malaya and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). He was also appointed as Education Consultant by the World Bank.
