Economic cost of alcohol culture

SINCE the United States of America has been referred as the epitome of liberalism, let's see this country's struggle in facing the culture of alcohol:

1. Among children:

According to American Academy of Child & Adoloscent Psychiatry mentioned "Alcoholism runs in families, and children of alcoholics are four times more likely than other children to become alcoholics themselves. Compounding the psychological impact of being raised by a parent who is suffering from alcohol abuse is the fact that most children of alcoholics have experienced some form of neglect or abuse."

Also, data were derived from the National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey, whereby the results showing approximately 1 in 4 children younger than 18 years in the United States is exposed to alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence in the family.

2. Among youth students:

In a report titled "Wasting the Best and the Brightest: Substance Abuse at America's Colleges and Universities", rates of excessive drinking have jumped over the years among college students. College presidents, deans and trustees have linked the culture of alcohol to poor student academic performance, depression, anxiety, suicide, property damage, vandalism, fights and a host of medical problems.

3. Among adult workers:

"Substance use issues pose an enormous risk to the health, safety and productivity of American workers," said Pamela Hyde, administrator of the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Refer the table given.4. Among women: stated that "Although specific statistics show that women abuse alcohol less than men, updated statistics suggest that the culture and advertising around women's drinking have changed so much that women now drink about as much as men do."

So, if you are not against Octoberfest and its alike due to religious reasons, think about money that goes down the drain. The economic cost of alcohol culture as per America's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, "The cost of excessive alcohol uses in the U.S. rose to almost a quarter trillion dollars in 2010.

Most of the costs resulted from losses in workplace productivity (72% of the total cost), health care expenses for treating problems caused by excessive drinking (11% of total), law enforcement and other criminal justice expenses (10%), and losses from motor vehicle crashes related to excessive alcohol use (5%)."Those who are having allergies to any religious motives, particularly Islam…. Let me tell you one thing, if you are rational enough, you will see the teachings of Islam will not only save you money, but also save your life, save your children and lineage, save your properties, save your intellectual, save your dignity. And the most important thing is, Islam saves your soul in the world and also Hereafter.

The only thing that you should celebrate in October is my birthday, say no Octoberfest in Malaysia please!
