PKR :Limit CM’s tenure to 2 terms, says Youth leader

GEORGE TOWN: A Penang PKR Youth leader today urged the state government to impose a two-term limit for the chief minister’s post, which is currently held by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

Bukit Mertajam PKR Youth chief Mohd Ikhwan Nasser Mohamad Isa said DAP should set an example after Pakatan Harapan on Sunday agreed to implement a two-term limit for the post of prime minister.

“We welcome the 13 promises made during Pakatan Harapan’s annual convention and we want to see the fifth promise, setting a limit for the prime minister’ post, to begin here at the state level.

“This will send a clear message to the people that Pakatan is committed to fulfilling its promises,” he said in a statement today, reported the New Straits Times.

Ikhwan also said such a move would demonstrate Pakatan’s readiness to carry out the comprehensive reforms underlined in its manifesto.

Pakatan secretariat chief Saifuddin Abdullah had on Sunday announced that the pact would introduce a two-term limit for the post of prime minister should it come to power as a way to promote a “healthier democracy”.

Pact chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was also named Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for prime minister, had expressed his intention to expand the two-term limit for the posts of chief minister and mentri besar.

Maverick DAP Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu had, since two years ago, spearheaded an initiative to limit the tenure of the Penang chief minister to two terms on numerous occasions but failed.

He was ridiculed and slammed by his own party members for his move.
