PCM chief lodges police report over death threat SMS

BY AUDREY DERMAWAN

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Outspoken Parti Cinta Malaysia deputy president Datuk Huan Cheng Guan today lodged a police report over a death threat he received yesterday.

The report was lodged at the Seberang Prai Tengah district police headquarters here at 9.20am.

An SMS, sent by an unknown person to his phone about 3pm, read “Cakap banyak kau mati!!!” (Continue to talk and you will die).

He replied to the message, and since then, the sender's phone had remained uncontactable.

Huan has been vocal on many issues affecting Penang, the latest being the controversial proposed RM6.3 billion undersea tunnel project.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has initiated an investigation following Huan’s report on the matter.

Speaking to newsmen after lodging the report, Huan vowed to continue to speak up against any wrongdoing in Penang without fear or favour.

He said he lodged the report following advice by friends, for the sake of his and his family’s safety.

He added that this was the first time he received such a threat, although he had been scolded or condemned through social media, which he deemed was normal.

“I hope the police will investigate the person behind the SMS and take the necessary action.

“However, let it be known that I, as a local Penang boy and a politician here, will not be cowed by such a threat. I will continue to speak up for all Penangites.

“We have no tolerance for corruption, abuse of power or any form of wrongdoing here in Penang,” he said.

Huan said he was unsure what had prompted the threat, as he had been vocal on numerous issues.

“I kind of know who is responsible for sending the death threat. I don’t want to pinpoint as I have no proof but I am sure you may have your suspicion as well.

“Let the police investigate. If there is proof, then action should be taken,” he added.

Bukit Mertajam, Huan claimed, was a “cowboy town” and a “hot seat”, where anything is possible.
